Your Debt Free New Year Plan

It’s a new year and the bills might be starting to flood your mailbox from all that holiday spending. It’s time to step back and make some wise financial decisions.

It’s easy for anyone to freak out when they get their ‘after-holiday’ bills. If you are stressing about those big bills in your mailbox, it might be a good time for you to turn that stress into anger. Get mad about all that money that is going out the door.

Haven’t you had enough of being broke? Do you enjoy living paycheck to paycheck? If you like being broke then this message is not for you. On the other hand, if you want to begin the journey to living without debt, then today is your day!

Here is what I believe needs to be done to get a grip on your money:

>>>Slow down on spending by cutting back on your lifestyle. Most of us would rather keep the party going. However, if you don’t choose to cut back voluntarily, you might find that you will be forced to cut back.

>>>Communicate with all family members. If you’re single, this is simple. If your married, both husband and wife must be on the same page.

>>>Speaking of ‘page’, it is important that you put your plan on paper. Whether you are single or married, putting your plan on paper keeps you focused on your goal.

>>>If you have teenage children, make sure they understand what you are trying to do. Let them know that money will be a little tight for now but it will only be temporary. If your teenage children know what you are doing, they will be less prone to make demands on you and might even be motivated to help out.

>>>If you are getting a tax return, plan on paying off some debt and foregoing that vacation or unnecessary large ticket expense.

>>>Consider getting a part time job now before school lets out and the part time job market slims down by teenagers on summer vacation.

>>>Focus on increasing job skills to increase your value in the job market.

Getting rid of debt will take some sacrifice on your part and on your family. However, if you sacrifice the ‘good stuff’ starting in 2008, can you imagine the start of your life in 2009?

Always stay ahead of the game by looking ahead. Make becoming debt free a big part of your goal for 2008 so that when the New Year comes around again, you can embrace it with a new outlook on life. Free to do the things that you and your family have always wanted to do.
