I have listened to thousands of reasons for overspending and getting into a pile of debt over the years from people of all walks of life. There has never been any common thread that neatly tied them all together to explain the reasons behind their credit dilemma.
Except this one…they all spend too much!
They all spend (err, charge) their money on different things, and for different reasons. It doesn’t matter how much or little the income they earn. The value of their home has no impact. Even their net worth does not matter. They just spend too much.
Spending too much is not a reason, it is a habit. Some may even call it an addiction.
You can get all the latest credit card debt reduction programs. Get all the credit card consolidation loans you want. If you can not identify and fix the underlying reason you will eventually end up in bankruptcy.
Here is my consumer credit professional advice. Ready? STOP SPENDING!
I know! It is much easier to say than to actually put into practice.
What prevents most people from implementing a credit card debt elimination strategy?
1.Procrastination
2.Unwillingness to face the real issue
If you can not or will not do it on your own than buy a product that will move you in that direction or get credit counseling help.
Try it on your own first. You can do it.
Start by trying to control your urge to spend. Avoid putting yourself into those situations where you are weak. Take the shopping channels off your favorite button on your cable or satellite remote. Cancel all your catalogs. Stay away from the malls.
When you go out, leave your credit cards at home. Take only enough cash you plan on spending. Learn to ignore your kids. Pretend you are a teenager again when they are begging you to buy them something. Aloof and centered on yourself unaware of anything not of interest to you is not that hard to do.
Work on creating a budget. Next, work on actually thinking of following the budget. Then try the budget and see how it goes. It will not be easy. Temptation is a powerful energy that will tempt even the strongest.
If all else fails, lie flat on the ground and look at the clouds and see if you can find a revelation for credit card debt elimination before darkness falls. Or, you could always call that debt counselor.
