Many people feel they need to know about bankruptcy records in their local area. Some are people looking to snap up a house or other property which has just entered foreclosure. Some are just looking to see if a potential customer or employee is the sort who may skip out on a bill. Some are concerned citizens worried about property values. Some are just curious. Luckily for all these people, it is possible to find many sorts of bankruptcy files online.

Many forms of bankruptcy files are readily available online through public records acts. This makes them much easier to find than heading down to a local center of public records, although this is still an option. In fact, persons curious about local bankruptcy problems may wish to head down to their local center of public records (usually located in the Mayor’s office) and simply speak with the clerk. But for those interested in more in-depth searches or who want to search from the convenience of home, there is the Public Access to Court Electronic Records center, or “PACER.”

The “PACER” organization will require registration and a credit card, but is relatively easy to use. You will have to pay a fee for each page of documents you access, but it is only a few pennies per page. PACER is a service provided by the US Judiciary and permits you to have access to any and all public records concerning bankruptcy files, among other court records. Only public records are available, so ongoing and recent cases will not be available, as well as those whose records were retained by the court due to security or privacy concerns. However, the vast majority of bankruptcy cases result in public ally available records which everyone can access, and most persons who request specific records will have no trouble obtaining them.

There are also many other online services which offer access to bankruptcy records, however they tend to simply use PACER themselves and then charge you extra. They also tend to charge subscription fees, making PACER a better choice, especially if someone only needs to obtain a small number of records. Still, a few of them offer search features or additional sleuthing which may be useful to some customers, making certain ones useful to certain customers. PACER remains the fastest, cheapest and easiest option for most users, however.
